Folke’s father was a skilled draughtsman, family friends included Piet Mondrian and Jan Sluijters, so colourful and vibrant paintings, right up to date, with lively conversations made for a busy, creative and stimulating upbringing for the young Folke.
Folke was not interested in school lessons and academic work at all, although perfectly capable. He showed an early talent for painting, drawing, mosaics and decorating objects, this fascination for working in different materials and experimenting continued throughout his life.
He finished military service in 1933, then after a foundation year with the painter Gustaf Röhling, he won a place at the prestigious Rijksakademie where he studied for 4 years.
