Public commissions

Folke made a joyous, colourful, lively tile decoration around this new lido.  Folke records “The opening ceremony was great fun, the weather was superb and the atmosphere was like one of Bert Haanstra’s comedy films…” which were so popular at the time.

The inscription is “Daar zoels Orion op de dolfyn zag ik hem vriendscap sloten met do golven.” The quote is from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, “Where, like Arion on the dolphin’s back, I saw him hold acquaintance with the waves,” chosen because the pool was not far from Holland’s acclaimed outdoor Shakespeare theatre.

The words are shown in the form of a rebus, which makes the word Orion.

The lido has been replaced with houses.
