Flikorna Lundgren Café 1949
This “Lucky Penny Window” was commissioned by the daughters of Yngve Fänge to celebrate their father’s successful life and be shown at their jointly run business the ‘Lundgren Sisters Café’ in Arild. The theme of the window commemorates their father’s great and valued friendship with Jim Read of Edinburgh who he met in the 1930’s when he visited there regularly for his shipping business.
Jim Read had a life of good fortune, his lucky penny saved his life when struck by a bullet during World War 1. Jim later wrote a book of his experiences and became a lifelong friend. The penny was always his lucky charm and eventually he gave it to his old friend Yngve Fänge.
The window, which measures 120 × 120cms, was made at Ringström’s Glassworks.
The work is in small pieces of glass with extremely detailed painting in intense colour, full of imagery and references. The lucky penny can be seen in the middle of the central panel.
