When Folke was asked by the architect Rolf Bergh to provide stained glass windows for this gem of an 18th century church he declined, saying “when I saw the highly ornate interior with all it’s charming paintings I realised that the windows would be too much of a good thing.”
“I came to the realisation that the most important aspect, the altar, was unbalanced and had arrangements that were not in keeping. Mieke made an altar weaving, a pediment was raised behind the altar, which I painted with marble effect, and clear glass windows were installed either side.”
The wooden cross from 1799 standing on the altar with the magnificent pediment on columns forming the frame for the weaving is wonderfully successful. The front of the altar is decorated with another weaving by his daughter. A masterpiece altogether of conception and making.
